Subject: Flotilla Commander’s Report, February, 2008

February is almost over and that means the winter is almost over too.
Our PE classes will soon start in full force with the February 25 class at Berner Middle School in Massapequa. We have a very aggressive schedule this year with two 5 night classes at Berner and five all day Saturday classes. We are going to need all the cooperation we can get, not only from our Instructors, but all of our members who can and should participate. Remember a good show at these classes will help us obtain referrals from other friends and family, as well as the possibility of new recruits for membership. Our only source of revenue is these classes, so if we can do well financially, we can do more in the way of fellowship and recruitment.

I would like to welcome our new unofficial member (AP status) Bill Dahl, and expect that we will all help to make his orientation into our group as easy as possible by offering guidance and assistance wherever and whenever we can.

I attended the Division Mentor/FSO-MT meeting on January 31. Although it was poorly attended, by approximately 13 people, I am proud to say that 4 of those were from our Flotilla. That’s 30% of the attendees from our Flotilla. Thanks to Nick, Joe and Ralph.
The Division is considering a Mentor Training program if there is sufficient interest. I have already expressed my interest on behalf of our Flotilla.

I attended the Division meeting on February 14. The awards program was again discussed and a vote on the proposed amendments will take place at the next Division meeting on March 13. Also, the budget for 2008 will be voted on at that meeting.
There will be a test of the 3N Notification System on February 23 and 24. Please be prepared to respond when you are called. If you registered with the 3N Notification System you should have received an email. If you are not registered please let me know. This is very important in case of emergency.

There will be a mock Category 3 hurricane call out at SJB on 3/22 from 13:00-15:00. There will be a Division PE class on 5/17 at SJB from 13:00-16:00 on How to Read a Nautical Chart, and GPS, charge will be $30 (I assume for nonmembers).

I have received non-reimbursable orders for MDA Patrols and will hand out at our meeting. Commander Young is expected to attend the next Division meeting. All members are encouraged to attend.

John Geiger FC of 13-07 expressed his thanks to Phil Pelter for leading his Flotilla’s IS training class.

I have amended, and forwarded to all, our Flotilla’s Emergency Response Plan.
Please let me know if you did not receive it.

I would like to put together a supplies order by the end of this month’s meeting. If anyone has any request for supplies, please bring your list.

Respectfully submitted,

Sol Zigman FC

Your Flotilla Needs You!  And so do I!

Now is the time to be thinking about what to do for the flotilla over these long drab winter months.  Well, I’ve got a great idea or two!  Have you ever wondered about becoming a qualified Instructor (IT) or a Vessel Examiner (VE).  This is a great time of year to get these qualifications out of the way.  In both cases all you need to do is pass an online exam, do some OJT (5 VSC’s for VE, teach 2 classes for IT) and we enter it into AUXDATA and poof you’re qualified.
